History of Jenkins and Son: Then and Now

Starting out nearly 40 years ago, this high street Fishmonger has seen many changes.

Back in the day it was run by Darrens Granddad, Charlie, who sold fish and other goods from back of a horse and cart in and around Dover until securing a shop in Deal town.

He then went on to move into 118 in the high street and ran the fishmongers and game supplier alongside his son, Stephen, selling fish, animal feeds, game and poultry.

When stephen sadly passed, it was left to Darren to take over the reins and move the business on to keep up with the changing times.

Focussing on sustainably caught and local produce Darren created a niche market for the new and old in the town.

Deal slowly grew to be known as ‘foodies haven’ and so visitors, tourists and locals were consistently hungry for quality fresh fish.

In addition to providing what the customers already knew they wanted, we employed a French trained chef to produce homemade recipes available for customers to buy frozen to Heat n Eat at home, and this proved popular.

Then COVID hit and, as we were providing an essential service, we continued to trade and offered home deliveries. This proved to be a massive hit and so the business grew.

Sacha, Darren’s partner implemented a re-branding and gave the shop a whole new look which has transferred over to the new much larger premises, just down the road from 118.

The old Rooks building has now become a Fishmongers and Street Food Bar all under one roof. Offering the same quality fish and seafood but with the addition of a seafood station, a large selection of frozen seafood, Chef made ‘Heat n Eat’ frozen ready meals, bisques, curries, pates, etc.

Freshly made sandwiches, salads, hot street food from around the globe and beers, wines, champagne and Caviar.

There are now fewer Fishmongers surviving due to climate change, fishing industry laws going against them and less people working in the profession, but Jenkins and Son are thriving, due to their ability to diversify and evolve with the times, ensuring they are always giving customers what they want.

It is well worth a visit if you are in Kent.
